Sites of Interest
Plaza de España or 'Plaza de los Pescaitos'
It is a central square which
is used as a meeting place with numerous cafes and bars around the
outside. It got its name from the ornate ceramic fountain in the
middle with goldfish swimming in the pond. The pond is surrounded
with palm trees. The town hall is located in the square.
Cape of Trafalgar
The cape of Trafalgar is a small
beach resort with beautiful scenery and cliffs. The beach has strong
currents and tides and can be a little risky for children and adults
unaccustomed to the sea. The turbulent waves can be fatal for swimmers
who venture too far. The lighthouse made famous from the battle
of Trafalgar dominates the horizon.
Castle
Alcazaba is a 11th century Moorish
fortress. It has beautiful gardens and a Ogee arch leading into
a jasmine scented courtyard. Most of the castle is now residential.
The local market just outside the castle is always bustling with
activity, with vendors selling fresh produce.
Church
Church of El Divino Salvador
was built on the site of an old Mosque. Its minaret decorated with
bells can still be seen. The mosque was Mudejar built by the moors
and just the front of the main aisle is Visigothic. Santuario de
Nuestra Senora de la Oliva is another local chapel with a 16th century
image of the Virgin Mary.
