The Canary Islands
A paradise of breathtaking
views, volcanic landscapes and beautiful beaches and perfect climate
the Canary Islands is a great tourist destination. The Islands are
located just off the coast of Africa, south west of Spain. They
consist of seven main islands and a bunch of smaller islets. La
Palma, La Gomera, El Hierro and Tenerife itself belong to the province
of Tenerife. Fuerteventura and Lanzarote belong to the province
of Gran Canaria.
Tenerife is the largest of the seven
volcanic Islands. Famous for its spectacular scenery and mild climate
it has earned itself the name ' Island of Eternal Spring '.
The island’s capital, Santa Cruz de Tenerife,
is an upbeat town geared for tourism. Its port was where the Spanish
civil war started. Today it is one of the busiest shipping ports
in the world holding many container ships, cruise liners, jet foils
and ferries. Going beyond the mega resorts you can still find tiny
fishing villages, whitewashed hamlets perched on hilltops. There
are even a few wild places around volcanoes and primeval forests
for the adventurous traveler to explore.
