Sites of Interest
Alhambra
The Alhambra is a sprawling
palace comprising of residential quarters, court complexes flanked
by official chambers, a bath, and a mosque of the thirteenth century.
The visitor will be captivated by the special combination of the
slender columnar arcades, ornate arches, fountains, and light-reflecting
water basins found in the courtyards. The legacy of the arab occupation
of Spain is best preserved in the Alhambra and the Alcazaba fortress
on the Alhambra hill.
Mombacho Volcano
On the outskirts of Granada is the Mombacho Volcano,
rising 4,593 feet above sea level. The Mombacho was declared a natural
reserve back in 1996, is a location for eco tourism. It is home
to many different types of flora and fauna unique to this region.
Several varieties of orchids can be found all over the cloud-forest.
An archipelago of islands called las Isletas are
also of volcanic origin. This archipelago, containing more than
360 little islands rich in plants, animals and birds. Visitors can
take an adventurous boatride and explore these islands.
Albaicin
This is the ancient Moorish
district, a charming place with steep and narrow streets and ancient
houses. It is where the moors constructed their first fortress and
it is where the last Moorish inhabitants were living until they
were expelled in the 1600s. Much of this neighborhood is a maze
of Muslim architecture, patios, and Arab baths.
