Transportation
Barcelona has a good public
transportation system and navigating the city is easy. The best
way to get around is the underground metro. If you want to enjoy
the sites of the city then the taxi or bus systems are your best
options.
Metro
The
Barcelona Metro is the most convenient way of traveling around the
city. The metro is made up of five interlinking lines. Trains run
on these lines at intervals of around six to seven minutes. Click
on the Metro map above to see it in a larger format. There
is a second subway system called the FGC (Ferrocarrils Generalitat
de Catalunya) whose lines reach out to distant parts of the city
as well as surrounding towns. Single trip tickets can be expensive
however if you intend to travel a lot then the more economical multiple
journey tickets are available. Tickets can be purchased in Metro
and FGC stations as well as at newspaper kiosks and lottery shops.
Bus
Barcelona
has an extensive bus network, but due to rush hour traffic is not
the quickest way of getting around. It does however, provide the
best view of the city. There are special buses that take visitors
on tours around the city stopping at several sites including a popular
shopping routes not well served by the Metro. These open topped
double decker buses take circular routes to just about every site
worth seeing in the city.
Taxi
The
black and yellow taxis of Barcelona are a quick and convenient mode
of transport. A green light on the car indicates they free to be
hailed. All taxis are metered and the drivers accept tips.
