National Theater: Historic landmark with magnificent murals and interior decoration. Classical opera, and other performance at night.

Whitten Collection: World's largest butterfly collection, magnificently displayed.

Pre-Columbian Gold Museum: Superb collection of pre0columbian gold figurines, ornaments, etc.

National Museum: Displays recording Costa Rica's history and cultures from pre-Columbian days to the contemporary setting. Housed in an old fort.

Central Highlands

Poas Volcano: Drive-up volcano with active fumaroles , viewing platforms, good geological displays, nature trails, and stunning views on clear days.

Butterfly Farm, La Guacima: Entertaining and enlightening breeding farm with walk-through display areas and guided tours.

Cafe Britt: Working coffee finca with guided tours, folkloric show, and coffee tasting.

Guayabo National monument: The nation's only pre-Columbian archeological site of significance; an intriguing entree into Costa Rica's Indian heritage. Good birding.

Irazu Volcano: The world's highest drive-up volcano. Stunning scenery en route.
