Program Overview: AZ Santiago

AZ Santiago is conveniently located in the neighborhood of Providencia, an elegant shopping district between downtown Santiago and the peaceful residential neighborhood of Las Condes. The Spanish language school is just a few blocks from Santiago’s efficient metro system, which provides easy access for students going downtown or to any other part of the city. The Spanish school in Santiago was founded in 1986, and over the years, the school has gained a world wide reputation for the quality of Spanish language immersion programs that it provides.

The Spanish language school in Chile has been a pioneer in the development and use of interactive video laserdiscs in the teaching of languages, and has produced their own instructional films in Spanish. Despite all this technology, the "human element" remains the key to the methodology used by the Spanish school. Further more, the Spanish language school in Santiago prides themselves on providing professional language training with special attention given to the unique and individual needs of their students.

Besides offering great programs, the Spanish school has some of the best facilities found anywhere in Latin America or Spain. As with many of our other schools, we not only provides general Spanish language study, but can also provide specialized programs for businesspeople, medical personnel, lawyers, etc. Check with us for more details about these specialized programs.

The Spanish school in Chile also offers a number of different excursions for our Spanish students, one or two afternoons a week. The excursions usually last about three hours and are guided by one of the Spanish teachers. These outings give students a chance to practice their Spanish and to learn more about Santiago and Chile.

Program Options

Standard Program: Group instruction, 4 lessons per day, 4 students max per class. The method emphasizes conversation to enable student to speak Spanish. That is why the Spanish school in Santiago limits group sizes to never more than four people in a class. The Spanish school also takes pride in doing a great job of fine tuning the formation of groups based on the level of the students that are with them at any given time. Using the results of your oral exam, the Spanish school will place you in a group within one of seven levels which helps reduce the differences in language proficiency between you and your colleagues.

Combined Program : This is a combination of our Standard Program PLUS 2 lessons of private tutoring in the afternoon. In the afternoon classes special attention will be given to your particular needs and interests. No new grammar structures are presented, but if you wish, old ones are reviewed. The emphasis of the afternoon class lies on improving your proficiency and extending active vocabulary. These classes nicely complement morning classes.

For special interest groups, such as international aid workers, teachers, or company employees, afternoon private classes can be tailored according to your needs and interests.

Individual Program: Private instruction 3, 4 or 7.5 lessons per day.

Under the 3-4 lessons format the following structure will be used:

The Spanish language school in Chile will tailor design a special curriculum based on an assessment of your language needs, interests, and the written test and oral interview you take during your first day. Depending upon the intensity of your program you will be assigned two or three instructors during your course. The advantage of private instruction, is that:

  • You learn at your own pace, not that of the slowest student in a group class.
  • You can choose the number of hours you want to study per day, and take them during the time of day you prefer.
  • Because you're the only student, you'll be speaking and thinking more in Spanish. Consequently you'll learn faster.

The 7.5 lessons per day course offers the following:

If you want instant results, this is the course for you. Immersion at the Spanish school in Santiago consists of 7.5 lessons of individual instruction per day from 9:30 AM - 5:00 PM. The school will tailor design a special curriculum based on a combination of your language needs, goals and Interests and the results of your written and oral exam. Here a team of four language instructors will keep you immersed (thinking and speaking) in Spanish. Your instructors meet every other day to assess your progress, and fine tune your curriculum as needed. Here's a sample of a typical day of Spanish immersion:

  • 09:30-11:00 Role- play a real-life situation in Spanish based on a scene from one of the in-class video laserdiscs.
  • 11:30-12:30 Practice new vocabulary and verb tenses through conversation and entertaining exercises.
  • 12:30-14:00 Time for lunch at a nearby restaurant, with your instructor- all in Spanish!
  • 14:00-15:30 No, it's not time for a nap! Grab a cup of coffee and let's see a segment of "Como Agua para Chocolate" in video laserdisc format . Learn new vocabulary and discuss the cultural differences between your country and Mexico which are depicted in the film.
  • 15:30-17:00 Quick review of new material learned this morning, and from yesterday's program.
