Country Overview
Germany, today one of the
most important European countries, both politically and economically,
is a fascinating country to visit. This country is known for a rich
if not turbulent history, amazing landscapes, impressive nature
reserves, and an incredible amount of cultural attractions. Each
corner of this country offers something interesting to the visitor.
The larger cities such as Berlin
and Hamburg are cosmopolitan cities. Stroll through these cities
and enjoy a range of interesting cafes, pubs, and restaurants. Each
region of Germany is different, and each city is a reflection of
the area where it is situated. Getting from city to city is easy
due to an efficient transportation system.
Germany is home to some of the
finest museums in the world. Visitors have the chance to see a wide
range of exhibits ranging from historical to contemporary significance.
In terms of architecture Germany has a wealth of important buildings.
During WWII many cities were badly damaged. Despite this many buildings
of importance have survived or have been lovingly restored to their
former splendor. The cathedral in Cologne somehow survived despite
the fact that almost everything around it was completely destroyed.
On the other hand , the Church of Our Lady in Dresden is being restored
to its former glory. Under any circumstance as you travel through
this country you will have the opportunity to see some amazing historical
treasures.
The countryside offers a unique
experience. Located strategically throughout the country are stunning
old castles and palaces. Certain areas are home to towns which still
retain much of the character of the past. Some have called these
towns and villages "open air museums" which offer a feeling
of times long one by.
Free time is very important to
Germans. During this leisure time, Germans love to take advantage
of the outdoors to participate in sports. The Alps offer the opportunity
for skiing, hiking, biking or hang gliding. Other areas provide
the chance to boat, or go wind surfing. Regardless of the area,
you are sure to find Germans enjoying the outdoor life!
Not so well known are the
tranquil but no less attractive landscapes of the Mecklenburg Seenplatte
or the Sachsische Schweiz, the heavily wooded tracts of the Spessart,
Rhone and Odenwald. They can be explored by canoe or on foot, on
excursions which end within the welcoming walls of a typical German
inn.
We are confident that
you will find Germany a wonderful place to spend time in and learn
German!
