The Shanghai Museum One of the most important museums in Shanghai is the Shanghai Museum. Today the Shanghai Museum has an extensive collection of more that 120,000 precious works of art. Of special interest are the collections dedicated to ancient Chinese, ceramics, paintings, bronze and calligraphy. The museum was founded in the early 1950's and quickly gained a reputation is an excellent museum. In the early 1990's the city government of Shanghai donated some land in the heart of the city for a new center for the museum. The new building is a unique architectural structure that has become a center piece for the revitalization of Shanghai. Presently the Shanghai Museum has 11 galleries and another 3 that are dedicated to temporary or special exhibits. When you combine the museum's world class exhibits, fascinating architecture, and high tech facilities, it is easy to see why so many come to spend a day at the Shanghai Museum.
