Shanghai is one of the most important cities in China which also means that it is one of the most accessible. You can arrive or get around by air, by land or by water. Below is an overview of some of the transportation options for Shanghai (China).

Getting To Shanghai

Airports
Shanghai (China) has two airports, the Pudong International Airport and the Hong Qiao Shanghai Airport. There are daily international flights into both these airports on a very regular basis. Additionally both airports have flights that service various other cities within China.

Pudong International Airport
This is the most modern of the two airports in Shanghai. It is located on the mouth of Yangzte and is roughly 20 miles from downtown Shanghai and 25 miles from the Hong Qiao International Airport. Taxis and buses service this airport. The fastest way to get to downtown Shanghai is on the speedy maglev train. Using this train it only takes 7 minutes to get into Shanghai.

Hong Qiao International Airport
This is the older of the two airports and it shows. Despite its age there are still plenty of international and domestic carriers servicing this airport. It is located roughly 10 miles from downtown Shanghai. There is regular taxi and bus service to and from this airport in Shanghai.

By train
Shanghai is one of the main hubs on China's railway network. This means there are plenty of options to take the train to other points of interest within China by train from Shanghai. Train service is available to and from Hong Kong and there are express lines to Wuxi, Nanjing, Hangzhou and Suzhou. The most important station in Shanghai is the Shanghai Rail Station which is located near Suzhou Creek. Before heading to a train station in Shanghai, make sure you are going to the right one.

By Water
Shanghai is perfectly situated on the Yangtze River which is a heavily used waterway in China. You can catch a boat to head up the river to places such as Jiujian, Wuhan and Chongqing. Additionally you can catch a boat to Japan and South Korea.

By Bus
Within Shanghai there are two main long distance bus terminals. By bus you can get to a variety of places of interest at a very inexpensive cost.

Getting Around Shanghai

Shanghai easily has one of the best public transportation systems in China. You will find it easy, quick and inexpensive to get around Shanghai and to get back and for from your accommodations to the Chinese language school.

Public Bus
The bus system in Shanghai is probably the cheapest and most convenient way to get around the city. Currently there are more that 1,000 different bus lines in the city servicing virtually all of Shanghai. The buses run from very early in the morning to pretty late in the evening.

Metro System
Shanghai has a modern metro system with 4 different lines. The system is well run and services the more interesting parts of the city. Our Chinese language school in Shanghai is conveniently located near a metro subway stop.

Taxi
As with and large city, Shanghai has an abundance of taxi that roam the city and are available 24 hours a day. You can catch a taxi from virtually anywhere. Not the least expensive of the options. However by western standards the taxis are cheap.
