Overview
Tiananmen (Gate of Heavenly Peace) is an important
symbol of China. This structure was built in 1417 and was originally
known as Cheng Tian Men (the Gate of Heavenly Succession). Historically
this gate symbolized the fact that the emperors had to obey the
orders of Heaven in the process of ruling China. In the early years
of the gate, the structure was ravaged by fire two times. It was
rebuilt during the Qing Dynasty in 1651 and at that time was renamed
Tiananmen.
In 1949 Chairman Mao declared the founding of the
People's Republic of China from Tiananmen Gate.
Tiananmen Gate is located to the north side of
Tiananmen Square and is actually a series of 5 separate entrances.
The central entrance, which is also the largest leads the visitor
into the Forbidden City. During Imperial times, only the emperor
was entitled to pass through the central gate.
Tiananmen Gate is more than just a gate. It is
actually a large building that is a magnificent example of ancient
Chinese architecture.
Today the Tiananmen Gate and Tiananmen Square are
utilized for important gatherings and processions and are considered
to be some of the most valuable historic sites in China.
