Overview
The Summer Palace is located a little over 10 miles
from the heart of Beijing. The Summer Palace is more than just a
series of buildings, it is also considered to be one of the best
preserved royal gardens in China. The area consists of a small hill
(Longevity Hill) and a large lake (Kunming Lake).
The garden area has 3 principle parts; residence,
administrative, and scenic area. The main portion of the administrative
area include the Hall of Benevolence and Longevity. It was in this
portion where state affairs took place. The residential area consists
mainly of the Hall of Jade Billows, the Garden of Virtue and Harmony,
and the Hall of Joyful Longevity. The scenic area include the hill
area and the lake itself.
The Summer Palace and the area it utilizes has
a long history of over 800 years. Over this time various structures
and modifications to the area have been made by various emperors.
During the centuries the Summer Palace has been a silent witness
to the history of the Chinese nation. Today it is an outstanding
example of Chinese imperial garden, and a potent symbol of one of
the major world civilizations.
