Beijing: A City Overview

Beijing, or Jing for short is the center of everything important within China. From politics to culture, to communications and trade, everything flows from Beijing. From a historic standpoint, Beijing stands with the 5 other important ancient Chinese cities of Nanjing, Hangzhou, Kaifeng, Xian and Luoyang. Over the centuries Beijing has been the center of politics and society, and as such there are an amazing amount of historic sites either within Beijing or in the immediate surrounding area.

Today Beijing is the capital of the People's Republic of China and is situated in the northern portion of the country. It is estimated that Beijing has a population of close to 15 million people.

Spend some time in Beijing and you can get a feeling for the Chinese way of life. You can spend time enjoying modern China at its best, or go off and explore relics of China's rich imperial history. Beijing offers the visitor of little bit of everything.

You could very easily spend days visiting important historic sites of interest in the area such as the Forbidden City, Tiananmen Square, the Temple of Heaven, the Summer Palace, museums and more. Additionally you can also explore traditional tea houses, outdoor markets, stroll down old alleyways, and more. This will give you a feel for "old China".

This however is not all Beijing can offer the visitor. Beijing today has a lot in common with other major modern cities in the world. You will encounter massive sky scrapers, modern shopping malls, commercial districts, pedestrian areas, and more.

Your day does not stop when the sun goes down in Beijing. From excellent restaurants, and abundance of bars and nightclubs, to concerts and cultural events, Beijing always has a surprise in store for you.

No words can adequately express all the charm of Beijing, therefore the only way to appreciate it fully is to experience it by yourself. If you decide to come to Beijing to study and learn Chinese you will have an amazing experience.
