Beijing: A City Overview
Beijing,
or Jing for short is the center of everything important within China.
From politics to culture, to communications and trade, everything
flows from Beijing. From a historic standpoint, Beijing stands with
the 5 other important ancient Chinese cities of Nanjing, Hangzhou,
Kaifeng, Xian and Luoyang. Over the centuries Beijing has been the
center of politics and society, and as such there are an amazing
amount of historic sites either within Beijing or in the immediate
surrounding area.
Today Beijing is the capital of the People's Republic
of China and is situated in the northern portion of the country.
It is estimated that Beijing has a population of close to 15 million
people.
Spend
some time in Beijing and you can get a feeling for the Chinese way
of life. You can spend time enjoying modern China at its best, or
go off and explore relics of China's rich imperial history. Beijing
offers the visitor of little bit of everything.
You could very easily spend days visiting important
historic sites of interest in the area such as the Forbidden City,
Tiananmen Square, the Temple of Heaven, the Summer Palace, museums
and more. Additionally you can also explore traditional tea houses,
outdoor markets, stroll down old alleyways, and more. This will
give you a feel for "old China".
This
however is not all Beijing can offer the visitor. Beijing today
has a lot in common with other major modern cities in the world.
You will encounter massive sky scrapers, modern shopping malls,
commercial districts, pedestrian areas, and more.
Your day does not stop when the sun goes down in
Beijing. From excellent restaurants, and abundance of bars and nightclubs,
to concerts and cultural events, Beijing always has a surprise in
store for you.
No words can adequately express all the charm of
Beijing, therefore the only way to appreciate it fully is to experience
it by yourself. If you decide to come to Beijing to study and learn
Chinese you will have an amazing experience.
