Getting Around Beijing (China)

Overview
There are a variety of ways
in which you can get around Beijing (China). The Chinese language
school can also assist you in terms of giving you ideas in terms
of how to get to places of interest within Beijing.
Below is an overview of the
different transportation options in Beijing.
Taxi
Taxies
will be one of the fastest and most convenient ways to get around
Beijing. They are easily found at all major transportation hubs
and throughout the city. By Western standards the cost to take a
taxi within the city is very inexpensive. You will be charged by
both meter, wait time in traffic, and depending on the time of night.
Tourist Train
These are trains that run from the main four railway stations to
important touristic sites of interest in Beijing. Tickets can be
purchased in a variety of locations.
Subway System
This
is one of the fastest and most inexpensive ways to get around Beijing.
Currently there are subway lines hitting all the important business
and tourist areas within Beijing. With the coming Olympics more
lines will be completed by 2008. Typically they run from early in
the morning to pretty late at night.
Public Bus
Buses are heavily used in Beijing. Once you get used to the different
types of buses and the routes, you can go anywhere in the city using
a bus. This is the cheapest way to get around Beijing.
Rickshaw
If you want to get a sense of old Beijing and some of the hutongs
(alleyways) take a rickshaw. It is a great way to get a perspective
of the local life. You can find rickshaws around some main areas
and of course tourism spots.
