China: A Very Brief Country Overview

China is one of the more interesting destinations a traveler can visit. China is a country with a long and rich history. It is ancient, mysterious and full of surprises. In terms of land mass it is the 3rd largest country in the world. In terms of population it is the largest. China offers the visitor the opportunity to visit world class cities, traditional towns and villages, and out of the way areas. Additionally China is home to an incredibly diverse variety of terrain, climate and natural attractions. As you travel through China you can find vestiges of Imperial China in every corner. China was ruled by an emperor up until 1911 when a revolution headed by Sun Yat-sen overthrew the monarchy. After a period of instability the People's Republic of China was founded in 1949. Since that time China has been on a path of modernization. This trend towards modernization has really taken off in the 1990's and will be very apparent to any visitor to places such as Beijing or Shanghai.

China is home to many different ethnic groups each with their own culture and very distinctive customs. As you spend time in China you will have a chance to meet and see some very interesting groups and places.
