Salvador, Brazil: A City Overview
Salvador is a vibrant and colorful city located
in the state of Bahia in the Northeast of Brazil. To say that Salvador
is famous for its style of music and dance would be an understatement.
It is the place to go to if you want to experience the rich and
interesting Afro-Brazilian culture.
Founded in 1549, Salvador was at one time the capital
of Brazil. As you spend time in Salvador you will notice the distinctive
cultural heritage of the city which is a mix of Portuguese and African
influences. This is very apparent in terms of the type of clothing
worn, the food of the region, and most definitely in both music
and dance.
In addition to a rich cultural experience, Salvador
is also home to some interesting colonial architecture. A trip to
the historic center of Salvador and you will see colorful colonial
buildings, churches built in the baroque style and big candomble
houses.
In terms our outdoor activities, Salvador is a
wonderful destination. The weather is mild throughout the year which
means you can spend a lot of time outdoors. The beaches in and around
the city are impressive. The waters are crystal clear and home to
countless varieties of tropical fishes. You can also hike through
rainforests in the area, raft down raging rivers, climb mountains,
or many other type of eco-tourism activities.
If you are in town during the right time of the
year, you will experience Salvador's Carnival Celebration. While
the celebration in Rio is more famous, many say that Carnival in
Salvador is actually much more interesting and fun.
Whatever reason you may have for deciding
to study and learn Portuguese in Salvador you will not be disappointed.
This city is unique and offers something for everyone.
