Rio de Janeiro: Transportation
Airports
Rio de Janeiro - Antonio Carlos Jobim International
Airport
Rio de Janeiro-Galeão (Antonio Carlos Jobim
International Airport) (GIG) is situated 14 miles (21 kilometers)
north of Rio de Janiero city center. Many major domestic and international
carriers use this two terminal Brazilian airport, with flights to
other South American destinations and beyond.
Rio de Janeiro-Galeão (Antonio Carlos Jobim
International Airport) has two terminals. Within Terminal One, passenger
facilities include banks, bureau de change, restaurants, cafés,
bars, shops and a pharmacy. In addition, similar services are to
be found in the central commercial area in Terminal Two.
Terminal One is the place to head if you are looking
to hire a car on arrival in Rio de Janeiro. Car rental companies
represented at GIG include Avis, Hertz and Localiza.
The best car parking options at Rio de Janeiro-Galeão
(Antonio Carlos Jobim International Airport) are the multi-storey
car lots that are well situated near the main terminals. Other covered
and uncovered parking options are available with provisions for
long-term parking and short-term parking.
Bus System
As well as the international airport, Rio de Janiero
is well served by a complex Brazilian bus network that links Rio
with literally hundreds of destinations throughout Brazil and beyond.
In general, Rio de Janiero is one of the most accessible cities
in Latin America.
Getting Around
Rio's public transport system is cheap and effective.
Buses are the most popular form of transport as there are lines
connecting the entire city, but keep an eye out for pickpockets.
Taxis are easily available and the subway system, although small,
is safe and reliable. Driving around the city in a rental car is
notoriously difficult so it is preferable to hire a car and driver.
