Austria has a population of approximately 8 million. Of this
population, the majority have a Germanic ancestry. As you travel
to the southern reaches of the country you will find a population
that has a more diverse ancestry. In terms of population density,
the northern region is the most densely populated. The five largest
cities in Austria are Vienna, Graz, Linz, Salzburg and Innsbruck.
Of the previously mentioned cities, only Vienna has a population
of over a million. The rest have population of less than 300,00.
During the Industrial Revolution of the 19th century, Austria
saw a large increase of European immigrates who were looking for
job opportunities. More recently there has been an increase of
immigration again, and currently there are over 500,000 Germans,
Poles, Turks, Czechs, and Slovaks residing in the country. Immigration
continues, and by some in Austria is considered a serious problems.
Interesting enough at least 200,000 Austrians themselves are working
in other European countries.
In a recent world study it was concluded that Austrians are
among the best educated. There is an excellent school system with
uniform standards throughout the country. It is required that
all children receive at least 9 years of schools.
When a child reaches the age of 10 they enter secondary education.
The two choices are the Hauptschule or the Gymnasium. Following
that some go on to the universities while others go on to a vocational
training program.
Currently Austria is home to 12 excellent universities and 5
fine arts schools. This type of education is available free to
all Austrians. At last count there where over 200,000 students
enrolled in the higher educational system of Austria.
