Country Overview
Austria
is a small country located in the heart of Central Europe. By way
of comparison, Austria is approximately the size of Main. The capital,
Vienna, is situated in the northeastern region of Austria. Its neighbors
consist of Hungary to the East, Italy and Slovenia to the South,
Switzerland to the West, and the Czech Republic and Germany to the
North. Due to a strategic location, Austria has long been an important
crossroad between regions in Europe. Cultural influences form many
different regions of Europe can be found within Austria.
In
terms of tourism, Austria is a popular destination within Europe.
During the winter months people flock to the country to experience
world class music events and to ski some of the best snow in the
world. In the summer tourists are drawn to the country to experience
spectacular scenery, participate in outdoor sports, participate
in festivals, or simply relax in a comfortable chalet. Two of the
more popular cities to visit are Vienna and Salzburg.
While
many come to Austria for the outdoor activities, don't discount
the cities themselves. Places like Vienna are known for world class
art and music events, excellent restaurants, friendly taverns, great
nightlife, and some of the best museums in Europe.
In
Austria Vienna is the most important city. The city is known for
a long and glorious musical tradition and some of the most stunning
architecture anywhere in Europe. Vienna is home to more than 10
theaters, the Vienna Boy's Choir, St Stephens Cathedral, The Vienna
Opera, the Spanish Riding Academy, and the Schonbrunn and Belvedere
Palaces. Some have said that Vienna's history is intertwined with
the likes of Freud, Mahler, Beethoven and Klimt.
Moving
out of Vienna, another city that should be visited is Salzburg.
Famous as the birthplace of Mozart, the city receives countless
visitors each year who attend the Salzburger Festpiele, the city's
annual music festival. History lovers will enjoy this fabulous city.
A first stop should be at the Kapuzinerburg Fortress. From there
explore the rest of the city on foot to really experience the Baroque
architecture of many of the buildings of the city. Other than the
buildings an exploration on foot will allow the traveler to discover
quaint cafes and nice restaurants.
Another famous stop in Austria is Innsbruck. Located in the heart
of the Alps, the snow capped peaks provide a wonderful backdrop
to this beautiful town. As with many towns in Austria, this town
is best discovered by walking around. The town itself is very charming
and has a rich history. Of course many come to Innsbruck to ski
some of the best slopes found anywhere in the world. The snow is
good and the trails range from easy to extremely challenging.
While
Austria is known for its skiing, there is an abundance of other
outdoor winter sports available. Austrians love to take advantage
of their mountains and wonderful snow. It is common to see Austrians
enjoying themselves ice-skating, curling, riding in sleighs or tobogganing.
During the summer hiking, biking or horseback riding are extremely
popular activities. It is a lot of fun to spend time traveling the
winding roads going from one quaint town to another.
Austria
offers something for everyone. From bustling city life, to hiking
along the paths of the mighty Alps. Discover castles, natural beauty,
boat down the Danube, plus much more. The people are friendly so
enjoy your stay!
