Argentina: A Brief Introduction
Argentina
is one of the largest countries in the world and second largest
country in South America. In South America only Brazil has a larger
land area and population. Surrounding Argentina one finds the countries
of Brazil, Bolivia, Uruguay, Paraguay and Chile. As such Argentina
is a great jumping off point to other areas of interest in South
America. There are countless daily flights from Buenos Aires to
other major cities in South America and the rest of the world.
Argentina is a country that seems
to have a little of everything in terms of climate and terrain.
While most of Argentina experiences a relatively temperate climate,
you can find tropical climates in the north and sub-polar climates
in the very south of the country. The central part of Argentina
consists of the fertile area known as the Pampas. In the north one
finds the heavily forested Chaco region. To the immediate west rise
the massive Andes and to the south you will find Patagonia.
Due
to the varied terrain and climate of Argentina, a visitor has countless
things to see and do during a visit to this wonderful country. Regardless
of where you may decide to go within Argentina, you are sure to
find some special surprise. If you like the mountains, then the
Andes is the place to be. For those looking for a more traditional
Latin American experience that a trip to Jujuy is in store. It is
said that this particular region of Argentina has a strong resemblance
to Peru and Bolivia. This region of Argentina is home to quaint
Indian villages, vast natural reserve areas and interesting archaeological
sites.
Moving south from the Jujuy region
of Argentina you will hit the province of Mendoza. If the name sounds
familiar it is because this region is becoming world famous for
producing some excellent wines. The countryside is stunning and
the portion of the Andes in this province are ideal for hiking and
climbing treks. If you are an especially accomplished climber you
may even consider climbing Aconcagua (22,800ft) which is easily
the high peak in the Western Hemisphere. Interestingly you may notice
that Mendoza in many aspects has more in common with Santiago, Chile
then with Buenos Aires. This of course relates to the fact that
in the past, this wonderful region of Argentina was part of colonial
Chile.
If
you like skiing or snowboarding, then Argentina is a great place
to visit. The snow conditions and various resorts in the Andes offer
world class skiing and snowboarding opportunities. You will find
areas that can accommodate all skill levels. Of particular interest
are the resort areas of Las Lenas and Bariloche. Due to their ideal
locations the snow is typically light and powdery, which is what
all skiers and snowboarders want! Even more interesting is that
during “our summer” you can head south to Argentina
and enjoy a wonderful winter adventure!
As you head further south along
the Andes you will encounter Patagonia and the Lakes District. To
say that this area is stunning would be an understatement. The wildlife
is abundant, the mountain lakes are deep blue, the mountain streams
and rivers are amazing, the mountains are incredible and the glaciers
are a sight to see! Visitors to this region of Argentina are in
for an experience that they will keep with them for the rest of
their lives.
In
the central region of Argentina one finds the vast area known as
the Pampas. This is the home of the famous Argentina cowboy or gaucho
as they are referred to locally. This area of Argentina is home
to vast herds of cattle and extensive farming areas. However this
area also have many interesting towns, beautiful outdoor scenery,
and some excellent national park areas.
If
you are interested in seeing and experiencing subtropical forests
then the region of Argentina known as Mesopotamia is the place for
you. Of particular interest is the area that borders both Brazil
and Paraguay. There you can find the world famous Iguazu Falls.
These waterfalls are considered by many to be the most impressive
in the world. In the waterfalls themselves you will have to see
the Devil’s Throat (Garganta del Diablo). Surrounding the
falls themselves and in the surrounding region are incredible plants
and abundant wildlife. Historically you may also consider visiting
some of the colonial Jesuit missions that are dotted throughout
the area.
Argentina as a country is simply
amazing. However the culture, the people and the towns and cites
make this country a wonderful place to visit and to study and learn
Spanish in. Argentina has very close ties to Europe and nowhere
is this more apparent than in the capital, Buenos Aires. From its
architecture, theater district, excellent restaurants and broad
avenues it is very apparent that these ties continue to this day.
If you want to spend time in a big city, Buenos Aires is one of
your best options out there.
If you want a big city, but something slower then
the hectic pace of Buenos Aires, the Cordoba is a great option.
As the second largest city in Argentina, this city is known for
some fascinating architecture, great weather, and friendly people.
At one time the dominant city of Argentina, Cordoba still offers
the visitor a charming place in which to spend time. Additionally
due to its location, Cordoba is an ideal jumping off point to various
parts of Argentina.
Whatever your reasons
may be for coming to Argentina you are sure to fall in love with
this country. Combine a fascinating country with great Spanish language
schools and you have a great destination.
