TARRAGONA JUNIOR PROGRAM INTERNATIONAL HOUSE
Ages 13-17

Tarragona is located just south of Barcelona on the coastIH Tarragona was opened in 1980. The school building is on a broad tree-lined avenue (the Rambla) in the very centre of the city. The school is spread over two floors of a typical town house and there are 10 spacious classrooms as well as a study area and students’ lounge. The school offers English classes to students from the local population throughout the year and Spanish courses in the summer – in collaboration with IH Barcelona.

The school offers modern classrooms combined with a computer room where connection to the Internet provides students with access to email. There is also a large selection of books, cassettes and other supplementary materials at each level for self-study to help students develop their language skills. Video and satellite TV facilities are also available in the comfortable lounge area and many of the original version films have explanatory notes.

IH-Tarragona offers an excellent Junior Summer School option for students ages 13-17 years. The program offers 3 lessons per day (Monday through Friday) of small group Spanish language instruction with 6-12 students per class, a varied social/cultural program 4 afternoons a week including sports, cultural visits, parties, films and days at the beach.

The timetable is usually from 9:30 to 13:00 (in high season from 14.00-17.30 also) Monday to Friday with a variety of different teachers. The format of instruction is identical to that of the Standard Program for adults.

This course includes classes, sports, social and cultural activities accommodation as requested, full-board and airport transfer(on arrival and departure). Saturday excursions. Age limits: 13 - 17 years. The accommodations are shared room.

Accommodations

Students have the option to chose between staying with local host families and residences. Both options provide students with 3 meals per day. These accommodations are shared room.

Host Families will change the bed linen and towels once per week. They will also provide basic laundry facilities. Some of the host families live within walking distance of the school. However, in many cases it will be necessary for the students to take a bus from their family to the school. A 30-day student bus pass, which allows four journeys per day, is included in the course fee.

Sant Jordi Residence: The Sant Jordi student residence is located in the city centre, less than 10 minutes walk from International House. The residence, which provides accommodation throughout the academic year to students from the University of Tarragona, was opened in 1998 and is very well maintained. Accommodation is available in double or triple rooms with sheets and towels provided. The bedrooms are equipped with wardrobes, writing desks and chairs, desk lamps, bookcases and mirrors. Facilities that are available free to students include a TV lounge, a computer room, separate study rooms, and a gymnasium. Washing machines are also available for a small charge. Students are provided with a key to their room and to the front door of the residence so that they can come and go as they please.. There is a 24-hour reception service.

Arriving in Tarragona

The school provides transportation upon arrival and departure from the Barcelona airport.

Supervision

The program in Tarragona provides a moderate amount of supervision for students. Student will have a curfew of 23:30 all nights except on Saturday when it is extended to 00:30. The host families and staff at the residences will enforce the curfew. There will be times when students are NOT supervised by members of the staff at the school. Students attending the program in Tarragona are expected to be mature and responsible enough to be able to handle themselves appropriately in a foreign country. Students are expected to abide by the school rules and any violations will result in immediate dismissal from the program.
