San Sebastian: Sites of Interest
Aquarium
The Donostia-San Sebastian Sea
Palace-Aquarium was inaugurated in 1928 under the initiative of
the Oceanography Society of Gipuzkoa, an organization founded in
1908 for the purpose of research on marine science, fishing and
navigation. The Sea Palace-Aquarium was the first museum to be founded
in Spain dedicated to natural science.
The tour displays all major marine
life environments from the Indo-Pacific region to the wonders of
the Amazon River basin. Take a tour through the underwater tunnel
that gives you a 360° view of sharks, electric rays, Morays,
and Lion Fish.
Monte
Igueldo
The most spectacular view of
San Sebastian, day or night, is high atop Monte Iqueldo. Here you
can get a 360° view of the beautiful countryside, the ocean,
beaches, and bay of San Sebastian. For people wary of a brisk hike
to the top take a ride on the Funicular.
In addition to the mountain top
view, explorers can indulge themselves at the amusement park created
in 1912. This quaint amusement park offers bumper cars, children's
games, pony rides, a roller coaster, logjam ride, and a mini zoo.
Located in the same area just
below Monte Igueldo between Ondarreta beach and the town of Orio
lies Igueldo Park spread over 4 square miles offering restaurants,
walking paths, fishing spots on the ocean, and areas to lounge in
the sun. Not as large as Central Park in New York City but the same
idea applies. Here you will find the beauty of the countryside without
leaving the cityscape of San Sebastian.
Monte
Urgull
On the other side of the bay
Monte Urgull lures young adults to the amazing views across the
bay, and the cool protection under the shade of the forest canopy
offers another inviting place to relax the day away. This area is
dotted with monuments and a castle perched high above, which contains
a chapel and many notable statues.
