Montreal: Museums

Québec City has numerous museums, including two that are the guiding lights of cultural life in the capital, the Musée de la Civilisation and the Musée du Québec, which has the greatest collection of Québec art dating from the 17th century to today.

In Montréal, the Musée d'art contemporain exhibits the works of modern masters from Québec and beyond, while the Montréal Museum of Fine Arts regularly hosts major international shows. The Canadian Centre for Architecture, the McCord Museum of Canadian History and the Musée d'archéologie et d'histoire Pointe-à-Callière are greatly appreciated by art and history lovers. In Gatineau, the Canadian Museum of Civilization has an enviable reputation for the quality of its exhibits.

In their travels around Québec, people interested in local history will discover interesting museums and interpretation centres presenting a full panorama of the history of the region and moments in the lives of great people from there.

The "economuseums" are a unique kind of museum that highlight the traditional knowledge and techniques of craftspeople, demonstrated in their workshops. There are nearly 30 of these sites, with everything from handmade paper and stained glass to bookbinding, honey and even whisky!
