Chalcatzingo Archaeology
site
In 1934 an archologist
rock carvings of spiritual fertility symbols at Cerro de la
Cantera in the south of Morelos. The area is beleived to have
been settled over 5000 years ago and is beleive to have at
one time been a home to people from the Olmec civilization.
Some of the more particularly
interesting carvings are "The Puma", "the Olmec
Altar", "Ball court", and "the Tlahuica
Altar". The name of the site comes from the Nahuatl word
meaning "Prized place of the Chalcas".
Tlayacapan
This site is home to many
chapels. The chapel was built in the early 16th century by
the Augustinians. This church became a convent now know by
they name of St. John the Baptist. A special system was arranged
to collect rainwater and still works to this day.
The town also hosts a great
museum with archaeological finds, mummies, and splendid murals.
The town also lays claim to beautiful handcrafted clay pots
and delicious food including mole and dried meat.
