Shopping
As with anywhere in the world, beware
of scams. You can purchase about anything you think of in Russia.
Just pay attention to what you are paying for.
Shopping in Russia
There are essentially two types
of stores in Russia. There are those that are foreign owned (Western
managed) and those that are Russian owned and operated. In the foreign
owned stores you will find a better selection of products and good
services. Payment is fairly easy as well.
In the Russian owned and operated
stores expect long lines and spotty service. These stores may not
except payment in anything other than rubles.
Note: though you may find better
service in certain stores, what stands for good service is vastly
different than what you find in the West. Be assertive to get noticed!
If not you could be standing around for a long time.
Souvenirs
If you are looking for a souvenir consider purchasing
caviar, vodka, and furs. Some of the more traditional items include
painted plates, spoons and mugs crafted in the village of Khokhloma
located close to Moscow. A famous item are wooden dolls (Matryoshka)
and finely crafted boxes. While you can purchase these items on
the street, the best quality ones (authentic) are best purchased
on a souvenir shop. You will pay more, but have a better chance
of getting an original.
One of St Petersburg's best souvenir shop is the
well known Naslyediye (Nevskiy Prospekt 116, metro Ploshchad Vosstaniya.
Tel: 279 5067). Another great place to shop is at the Russkiy Dom
(Ulitsa Chaykovskovo 65, metro Chernyshevskaya. Tel: 2751565).
In St Petersburg a great place to stop by is the
Klenovaya Alleya. If you are looking for a great souvenir stop by.
Open daily. Nearest metro stop is the Gostiniy Dvor. From there
head in the direction of Ploshchad Iskusstv.
You can also stop by one of the many open air markets
(bazaars). Lots of interesting items can be found. Practice up on
your bargaining skills. It will pay off!
