Train
Train is a great way for many to arrive
in Russia. Due to proximity some of the most important rail
lines from Europe into Russia run from Warsaw, Budapest,
Helsinki and Prague. In addition to the most important lines
there are also rail connections from numerous other cities
in Europe as well.
When in Russia, and if you have plenty
of time you should consider taking the exotic Trans-Siberian
Railway. The entire trip takes 6 days and runs from Moscow
all the way to the Pacific side of Russia. It is a great
opportunity to see Russia.
Inside Russia itself you will find that
most Russians take the train. The great thing about the
trains is that they are very inexpensive. The down side
relates to the fact that they are also very slow. Despite
this, trains are still a great way to travel between cities/regions
of Russia.
Air
As you would expect, there are numerous daily
flights between Moscow and major cities around the world.
Additionally since St Petersburg is also an important city
you will find an abundance of flights to that city as well.
The following is a list of some of the bigger
airlines flying international routes into Russia: Aeroflot,
Air China, Air France, Air India, American, Alitalia, ANA,
Balkan, British Airways, CSA, Delta, Finnair, JAL, KLM, Korean
Air, Lufthansa, LOT, Malev, PIA, Sabena, SAS, Swissair, and
others.
Road
If you are feeling adventurous you can rent a car in St
Petersburg and Moscow. You should realize that it is probably
better and easier to make use of public transportation. Russian
are famous for their terrible driving habits, strange driving
rules, heavy traffic, etc.
If taking a taxi make sure
you negotiate a price prior to leaving. Avoid unofficial taxis
or ones that already have passengers in them.
Bus service is also possible
however not highly recommended. They are slow and uncomfortable.
However sometimes you may be forced to use them, so enjoy
the experience!
