Air
San Juan's airport, Luis Munoz Marin International
Airport, is 7 miles east of the cruise port. Taxis cost less
than $20. Drive time from the airport to the cruise port is
30 minutes. San Juan is a major hub for American Airlines,
so there's easy access to its US domestic network. A number
of other North American carriers fly between Puerto Rico and
a score of mainland cities. There are excellent air connections
to a heap of Caribbean islands, including BWIA flights to
Antigua, Barbados, Jamaica and Trinidad, and Air France.
Road
Public Transportation in San Juan is convenient
and efficient, with regular bus service on established routes.
Taxis are available at the airport, hotels and major tourist
points. In the tourism zones, rates are fixed and posted.
Outside the zones, taxis are metered and can be hired by the
hour. Some hotels include transportation in special buses
to their properties. Renting a car is the best way to see
the island. International car rental agencies are well represented
on the island, and there are plenty of local operators. US
driving license is valid. Gas is sold by the liter, distance
is measured in kilometers, and speed is measured in miles
per hour. The legal driving age is 16.
Ferries
Ferry service is available at the small
port of Fajardo in the east of the island to reach Culebra
and Vieques. At least four ferries a day ply either route
and the journey to either island is around one hour. It's
possible to take a car, including rental cars, on the ferry
to Culebra but it's necessary to book well in advance. Private
boats can also be chartered at many of the marinas on the
east coast.
