Fiestas Patronales or the Patron Saint Festivals are Puerto Rico’s most popular events. The festivals, held in honor of the patron saint, take place throughout the 78 municipalities on the island. Festivities are held in town squares and include costumed religious processions, games, rides, traditional food and dance, live music and performances.

Puerto Rico Danza Week commemorates the most expressive art form in the Puerto Rican culture: danza music and dance. Rooted in Puerto Rico’s Spanish heritage, danza was originally enjoyed by the wealthy as a common social activity. Eventually, the music became a tradition for all Puerto Rican people. Composers, such as Juan Morel Campos, were inspired to write about romantic confessions, lost loves and shared affections, which became the predominant themes in this type of music. The national anthem, La Borinqueña, is Puerto Rico’s best-known and most sentimental danza. The International film festival held in november, exhibits more than 100 films from around the world. Recognized by the International Film Critics Circle, this festival is an event not to be missed by the movie connoisseur

Every Puerto Rican town celebrates its saint's day, often with a mixture of pagan and Catholic iconography and Indian, African and Spanish traditions. There are solemn religious aspects and plenty of feasting, music, dancing and colorful costumed processions. One of the best is the Festival of St John the Baptist in San Juan in late June, which wonderfully fuses the religious and the secular. The highlight of the parade is a communal luck-enhancing midnight walk backwards into the sea. Worth a detour are Mayagúez's twinkling La Virgen de la Candelaria in early February and Loíza's jubilant St James Festival, which takes place late July and celebrates the town's multicultural heritage.

San Juan Bautista Day (Patron Saint of San Juan) is celebrated on 23rd June. Walking backwards seven times into the ocean's waves at midnight, traditionally ensures good luck for the next year. Definitely practiced by thousands of people along the beach coastlines.

Festival de la Bahía 8-11 July is a musical event that attracts a multitude of visitors each year. The popular and internationally famous singers and musicians give plenty of reasons for dancing in the streets. La Bahía is San Juan Bay, which lends its natural tropical beauty as a backdrop.
