Social
Portugal is a fascinating
country. Despite the small size of the country, each region
has it own culture and traditions. It has been observed that
the Portuguese live in an old fashioned liesurely manner.
These people are renowned for their hospitality. They are
not a formal people, and as such casual clothing is accepted
in many areas.
Portuguese Food
A visit to Portugal also brings with it
the chance to enjoy the rich diversity of flavours offered
by Portuguese cuisine. This great gastronomic variety inevitably
derives from the country's unique geographical conditions,
where there is such a wide diversity of regions in such a
small space.
It also derives from the effects of the country's
having been occupied over the centuries by so many different
peoples, all of whom brought with them new cultures and new
habits.
As they are a people who have always loved
to experiment, the Portuguese naturally adapted these various
influences to their own taste.
On returning from their great voyages of
discovery to the Far East, Africa and North and South America,
the Portuguese brought with them and spread across Europe
all kinds of different spices (pepper, ginger, chilli pepper,
cayenne pepper and cinnamon) that were then used to enhance
the flavour of their food, as well as a number of other exotic
products that have since become everyday items at our dining
tables, such as tea and rice (from the Far East), tomatoes
and potatoes.
Entertainment
The widest
range of entertainment available are located in the larger
towns and cities of Porrtugal. Activities range from nightclubing,
a night at the theatre, catching a move, stage shows, or folk
music and dancing. If you are looking to hear the traditional
Fado music, it is not a problem. Many restaurants offer this
type of music in the later hours of the evenings. For those
feeling lucky, there are a variety of places where you can
make a wager. Talk to the locals to discover the best casinos.
Shopping
Shopping in Portugal can
be a lot of fun. If you want modern items, that is not a problem.
However the real joy relates to purchasing some of the locally
made Portuguese products. Some of the more popular items include
the following: ceramics, wood products, porcelain, china,
glassware, and leather items, just to name a few.
