The Wines Of Portugal

The region associated with the best wines in Portugal is Minho. Located in the north, this region produces a variety of wines, the most famous being ports. The popularity of port took offer after a trade agreement with the British in the early 1700's. Interestingly enough, there are many wine producers that still bear English names. Some of the more popular include Graham and Croft.

Music & Folklore

The most well known Portuguese musical styles is the fado. It is a form of music that has a melancholy feel to it. The fado traces it musical roots back to sailors songs from the mid 16th century. Lisbon is famous for its fado clubs. These clubs are found throughout the city, but some of the best places to go are located in the Alfama or Bairro Alto area of the city.

In terms of crafts, Portugal is famous for the production of beautifully decorated tiles which are called azulejos. For those that are interested, it is possible to take classes which teach the process of making these tiles.

Finally the traditional dances of Portugal are best found in the inland areas of the country. In some of the smaller areas stop by to visit local festivals to see some of these traditional dances.

Water Activities

Many people travel to Portugal to enjoy a beach holiday. The southern region of Portugal offers some of the best beaches in Europe. Activities available include sailing, windsurfing, swimming, snorkeling, and much more. Diving in certain regions is possible, as is fishing

In the north, many people travel up the Douro Valley by boat. The scenery is amazing. Additionally one can stop at any one of a number of old villages to try out some of the local wines.

Other Options

One of the more famous parks in Portugal is he Peneda-Gerês National Park. This is a nature park located in the northern region of Portugal. Great hikes are possible here.

Visit the Foia forest to hike some beautiful trails and see some incredible scenery.

Finally, why not try your hand at biking through Portugal. If you have the time and are in shape, it is a wonderful way to really experience the country.
