Porto is a city that
stretches along the northern bank of the Douro River. Despite
the size of the city, the majority of the important sites
of interest are located within the city center. Of these sites,
almost all are within walking distance of each other.
The easiest way to to get
around Porto is by taxi. They are abundant, easy to flag down
and relatively inexpensive. Taxi fares are metered, with the
exception of the long distance carros
de aluguer. These taxis have a large "A"
prominently displayed. Please make sure to negotiate a price
prior to departure.
Another great way to getting
around Porto is by bus. Visit any STCP office to get a list
of bus schedules. You can purchase bus tickets from a variety
of places such as news stands, bus stations or various kiosks
throughout the city. Travelers can purchase single ride tickets,
one day city passes, or tourist passes. Purchase what you
need. Under any circumstance, bus is a great way to get around
Porto.
Porto has 10 major bus
terminals spread throughout the city. Please note that bus
service is more limited after 9pm.
If you want to have some
fun take a tram. In central Porto it is possible to find that
last surviving tram route. The route offers a view of some
of the more interesting sites within Porto. The tram actually
runs from central Porto all the way to the coast at Castelo
do Queijo. Tickets for the tram are available at a variety
of locations throughout the city.
Finally work began an
a new underground system in 1999. Once fully complete, the
system will make travel throughout Porto even easier than
they currently are.
