Transportation
Getting to Lisbon
Air
Portugal is served by TAP, the national carrier.
Major european airlines also fly to Lisbon. All flights land at
Aeroporto de Lisboa on the northern border of the city. As you leave
the airport terminal you can take busses that lets you off right
in front of the tourist office. You can also take the express AeroBus
as an alternative. A taxi ride from the airport is the fastest and
most expensive way to get there.
Train
Portugal's main railway network varies in time
and speed. There are train services into and out of Lisbon, which
can potentially be confusing because of the four main stations serving
different destinations and the system of discounted tickets.
Bus
Portugal has many privatized bus services that
offer great speed and flexibility.
Getting Around Lisbon
Lisbon has an efficient system of buses, subways,
trams, funiculars, and trains. They are convenient and should be
made full use of. Tourists need to watch out for taxi drivers and
train counters charging extra. Make sure you know in advance what
the fare should be. Driving around the mainland can be tough and
risky although it is the most flexible means of transport. For smaller
distances trams are a great choice. These offer beautiful views
of the harbor and older neighborhoods. Funiculars are railways that
ascend a mountain using a cable. These could also be made use of
for transport. Walking can be a great experience however do keep
one eye out for traffic.
