What to eat when traveling to Guanajuato Mexico

Dining & Food

Guanajuato, as with its cultural wealth, is also famous for its cuisine. Throughout the state, one can find an exquisite variety of dishes. Apaseo el Grande, is famous for its snacks and appetizers. Celaya, is famous for its candies including soft fudge made from goat's milk, sweet wafers, custard candies, almond cheese and nut candies.

The northern part of the state is famous for its dairy ice cream and dishes such as grilled prickly pear leaves, tripe, dry marinade and a traditional drink fermented from cactus fruit called colonche. Irapuato is the strawberry capital of the world. Dolores Hidalgo is known for the sheer variety of flavors of ice cream. Pulque is another drink made from fermented cactus. San Luis de La Paz is best known for its variety of chilies. Typical Guanajuatós dishes include enchiladas, tamales, marinades, lentils and corn and tortilla based snacks and other appetizers.

Being a university town there are several places where you can find budget meals. However there are a few upscale restaurants that serve up the traditional fare. North American and European cuisines are also easily available.
