Guanajuato, as with its cultural wealth, is also
famous for its cuisine. Throughout the state, one can find an
exquisite variety of dishes. Apaseo el Grande, is famous for its
snacks and appetizers. Celaya, is famous for its candies including
soft fudge made from goat's milk, sweet wafers, custard candies,
almond cheese and nut candies.
The northern part of the state is famous for
its dairy ice cream and dishes such as grilled prickly pear leaves,
tripe, dry marinade and a traditional drink fermented from cactus
fruit called colonche. Irapuato is the strawberry capital of the
world. Dolores Hidalgo is known for the sheer variety of flavors
of ice cream. Pulque is another drink made from fermented cactus.
San Luis de La Paz is best known for its variety of chilies. Typical
Guanajuatós dishes include enchiladas, tamales, marinades,
lentils and corn and tortilla based snacks and other appetizers.
Being a university town there are several places
where you can find budget meals. However there are a few upscale
restaurants that serve up the traditional fare. North American
and European cuisines are also easily available.
