Spanish Study Housing
Students
who study Spanish in Mexico know the warmth and once in a lifetime
experience they encounter when staying with a host family in Playa
del Carmen. The home stay experience provides a means for students
to practice their Spanish and learn about the culture of the Mexican
people. This student housing option provides students will with
their own individual room unless traveling with a companion as well
as 2 meals per day which are breakfast and lunch. The host family
will also do your laundry once every week. Air-conditioning is not
common even in these middle class households and students should
not expect to have their own bathroom. The term middle class is
based on local standards in Playa del Carmen and should not be considered
the same as a middle class home North America and Europe. The host
families in Playa del Carmen are approximately 10-30 mintutes on
foot from the Spanish language school. All people attending a Spanish
program in Playa del Carmen should recognize the strengths of staying
with a Mexiccan family in order to receive the best experience possible.
Gifts
for the host family are not necessary but are welcome and are perfect
for opening up conversation with the family. These can be basic
as some candy or something produced in, or represents your home
town. Do not be bashful about requesting necessities like a new
light bulb, an additional blanket, or anything within reason. Each
student is different and the family must know if you need something
that another student may not require to make them comfortable. If
you have any problems with the host family that is directly related
to the family, please contact the director of the school to address
the issue or change your host family. Your experience should be
great but family-student chemistry is not always perfect so it is
better to bring up issue rather than waiting till the end of your
program to complain. All students will be provided with a key to
the home and should treat it like they would their own home. Be
sure to let your host family know if you will be missing a meal
if you want to go out with some friends, so that they don't prepare
any food for you.
The host families in Playa del
Carmen are first rate for the different qualities that are expected
of a homestay and some become lifelong friends that you will be
sure to visit on return trips to Mexico.
