Yucatan Cuisine

Playa del Carmen and many cities within the Yucatan Peninsula have a unique local cuisine. The area has also developed a cosmopolitan flair on food to cater the thousands of tourists and Spanish students that visit their towns each year. There are many restaraunts that have their takes on French, Italian, Japanese and other dishes from around the world.

The most popular local dishes are cochinita pibil and pollo pibil. These dishes contain delicious pork and chicken respectively with a pungent sauce made of achite chiles, orange, and garlice served in a banana leaf. Another favorite dish is poc chuc made from a pork steak marinaded in orange and other spices. These Mayan dishes emphasize culture area and the roots held strong in Mexican history.

All students that go to the Spanish school in Playa del Carmen will have to try the huevos motuleños This dish is comprised of fried eggs ham, cheese, and peas; another great option while dining on the Yucatan is turkey with dark chile salsa. Most of these specialties are created with many different spices inluding peppers, cloves, cinnamon and black pepper. All dishes typically come with tortillas. In most restaraunts you will find well known dishes from Mexico, dishes such as tacos, flautas empanadas, tostadas, and enchiladas.

Adult beverages such as tequila and sangrita are also popular drinks in the area. Aguas frescas is a cold water flavored with sugar and fresh fruit juice. You also can't have a hot day on the beach without a michalada beer and lime juice
