Cenotes Around Playa del Carmen
While learning Spanish in Playa del Carmen, students will have the
opportunity to see one of nature's wonders in many spots around
the Yucatan Peninsula. These natural sinkholes are known as Cenotes,
which literally means sacred well in the Mayan language.
The northern portion of the penisula consists of many caverns that
are cut out by under ground rivers. When the rivers cut through
the earth eventually the ground above gives way forming the open
area known as a cenote.
The Mayan people also built portions
of their empire near the cenotes as they used the natural wells
as a water source. Today the cenotes are
well known for cave diving. Some of the best diving sites are at
Dos Ojos and the Bat Cave. You can find many of these Cenotes around
the Playa del Carmen and Cancun area. You must have a special diving
certification and unique equipment is required before venturing
into this adventurous sport while in Mexico.
Students that are learning Spanish
in Playa del Carmen, Mexcio can check with the school for information
on local outfitters that can help arrange for dive certification
and/or guided trips to explore the Cenotes. The Spanish school in
Playa del Carmen offers excursions to the Cenotes on an occasional
basis.
