Archaeological Sites
There are abundant archaeological
resources in the State of Oaxaca. The National Institute of Anthropology
and History (INAH) has to date discovered 4,000 different archaeological
sites. These sites have helped determine many characteristics of
the civilizations, origins and history of the Mexican culture. These
sites are open for visitors and with the help of guides can be a
very interesting and enjoyable experience.
Monte Albán and
Mitla are two sites that have become famous all around the world,
attracting a high number of foreign visitors. Other important sites
include Dainzú, Guiengola, Huamelulpan, Huijazoo, Lambityeco,
Nopala, San José el Mogote, Tututepec, Yagul, Yucuita and
Zaachila.
It is amazing how wisely the
sites were chosen and designed to facilitate development of human
life and culture. Some of the symbols and trails found were almost
indecipherable. Several tombs were also unearthed from various sites.
Some excavations let to information about religion, clothing, and
adornment of the Zapotecs as well as samples of Zapotec and Mixtec
lapidary art and goldsmithing. Several treasures were also found
in these tombs including small gold and jade counters, pearls, and
innumerable pieces of turquoise.
There are several agencies that offers standard
and private tours to archaeological sites, artesanian workshops,
handicrafts areas and colonial monuments. They also arrange for
airport transportation, guides, translators and drivers.
