Colonial Architecture

 

Morelia's historical center is a well planned central square with a grid design. It is a dream come true for lovers of colonial architecture with its elaborately decorated buildings and stunning structures. Shopping, Museums, and historic attractions are within a few blocks of the square. Some of the main attractions are

Aqueduct - Its 253 baroque arches were constructed in 1785 to provide drinking water to Morelia.

Antigua Alhóndiga - Built 1774 as a city granery, today the Alhondiga houses the Civil Courts.

The Government Palace, built in 1732. This building was home to the Tridentate Seminary and was the ideological cradle of the Independence. Inside it, are valuable oil portraits and a mural with a historic theme painted by Alfredo Zalce.

Antigua Casa de Gabriel García Obeso - Constructed in the late 18th C with neoclassic exterior and baroque interiors.

Antigua Casa del Diezmo or House of the Tithe - This beautiful baroque style building was built in 1750 to serve as the offices and storeroom for the tithe.

Mask Museum - The Mask museum is part of the Templo y Ex-convento del Carmen. Built in 1593, this structure underwent several restorations and was eventually converted into the Morelian Cultural Institute for workshops and exhibits.

Museo Casa de Morelos - This mansion was the birthplace of Jose Maria y Pavon one of the heroes of Mexican Independence. It was built in 1758 and was later destroyed in 1888. The present-day building is from late 19th century. It was remolded and reconditioned for cultural purposes in 1964. It is now a museum displaying historical artifacts and documents.

Municipal Palace - This building has an octagonal courtyard. It was built at the end of the 18th century and was used as the Municipal Palace or town hall, since 1859.

Palacio Clavijero - This Baroque-style building dating from the middle of the 17th C. has housed the Michoacan Congress since 1824 and is one of the cities most important monuments.

Public Library - Baroque style construction of the 17th C. originally the Temple of the Company of Jesus. Converted to a Public Library in 1930.
