Puccini Festival
The Giacomo Puccini
Festival at Torre del Lago
On the lakefront - The
Giacomo Puccini Festival is held every year in the summer,
in July and August. Enjoy a performance of one of Puccini's
Operas in an open air setting, at night, under the stars,
and in front of the lake of Torre del Lago.
The Puccini Festival of
Torre del Lago is is a great opportunity to make close encounters
with the region that inspired the great composer, Giacomo
Puccini. The lake and the salt marsh that surrounds it hide
a world full of unique beauty. Puccini settled this delightful
landscape in 1891.
The Puccini museum and
villa overlooks the small square nearby the lake. A tour inside
reveals a room that has been converted into a chapel, where
one can find the the remains of the Giacomo Puccini, his wife
Elvira and his son Antonio. Here you can also admire a collection
of precious relics such as the piano where Puccini worked
on by night. Just next to the chapel, which was designed personally
by the composer, there is the entrance to the Open-air theatre,
with its stage, that seems to be build directly on to lake
Massaciuccoli.
The Festival of Torre del Lago was first started in 1930,
in accordance with the Giacomo Puccini wishes. In November
of 1924, in a letter addressed to Giovacchino Forzano, Puccini
wrote: “I always come out here and take a boat to go
snipe shooting…but just once I would like come here
and listen to one of my operas in the open air”. This
statement remained so impressed in Forzano's heart, that six
years after the composer's death, he put the wish into practice,
and together with Pietro Mascagni - who had studied and shared
a room with young Puccini - started the Puccini Festival in
Torre del Lago.
After seventy years in
the running, the most prestigious and important names in opera
have appeared on the programs of the Festival at Torre del
Lago. Some of these productions have become unforgettable.
Torre del Lago Puccini
is situated close to the superhighway-exits of Florence-Seaside
and Genoa-Leghorn making it a perfect starting-point for discovering
all that there is to see.
