Taormina: Tourism
Taormina is a well developed
tourism resort, worldwide renowned and endowed with a large
number of beaches, hotels, restaurants and entertainment facilities.
It has a nice climate and a rich vegetation, with several
other tourism sites around.
Taormina offers the visitor plenty of beaches,
bathing sites and fishing areas. Some bathing spots are great,
like the Mazzarò Bay, stretching between Capo Sant’Andrea
and the Isola Bella with some beautiful marine grottos.
The Municipal Garden, dedicated to the Duke
Colonna of Cesarò is a green area offering a panoramic
view of the coast and of the volcano, and rich vegetation
mainly composed of tropical and mediterranean plants.
Short trips away from Taormina are several
nice sites and resorts. Letoianni is a tourism developed resort,
offering natural beauty and great seafood cuisine. Castelmola
has a nice castle and a lake, the Etna volcano along with
Giardini Naxos and the area of the Alcantara river, whose
canyons wereformed from eruptions of a small volcano north
of Etna are other great sites as well.
Many artists including
painters and writers have passed through Taormina only to
discover that its beauty is irresistible. Their interpretations
and experiences were expressed in their art forms. Taormina
is famous as an international tourist destination thanks to
Otto Geleng, a young red-headed Prussian painter. While on
his journey through Taormina he became enchanted by the scenery
and natural beauty of Taormina. Geleng stayed in Taormina
for brief time, while there he painted much of what the town
had to offer. Through his paintings, the beauty of Taormina
was talked about all over Europe.
At the end of the nineteenth
century, it became a fad for nobles and well-off English men
to own property in Taormina. Travelers came from all around
the world including the North Americans, Austro-Hungarians,
Baltic people, Belgians, Swiss, Dutch, and Germans started
to purchase more and more villas. Even today Taormina is a
wonderful Sicilian resort town that attracts visitors from
all around who are looking to soak up the remarkable beauty
that it has to offer.
