Taormina:
A City Overview
Taormina’s popularity
is due to its incredible beauty, history and architecture,
as well as its reputation for making travelers feel welcome.
Taormina is perfectly situated to offer Italian language students
easy access to the beautiful and historically important treasures
of Sicily. Most people do not seem to realize how much Sicily
has to offer: with its sun, golden beaches, warm aqua blue
water, snow-capped volcano--Mount Etna, forests and rolling
hills. Sicily has always been at the center of the Mediterranean
Sea. And therefore, has always been the center of Mediterranean
history.
Every major European royal
dynasty that wanted to have power in Europe had to "own"
Sicily, and as such, every major Mediterranean power has left
its mark on Sicily! Important artistic, architectural, and
cultural remains are visible in virtually every town of this
island in the heart of the Mediterranean Sea.
The city of Taormina is an important archaeological location.
The first Greek Colony in Italy was established in its Bay
of Naxos. And the town is also home to one of the most famous
Greek Theatres in the world, where the main events of the
summer are held. Such events include: Film, Music, Dance and
Theatre International Festival of “Taormina Arte.”
There are also many more important monuments in town, from
the Greek period to Roman, Byzantine, Arab, Norman, Spanish,
French, etc.
With a strong vocation for tourism, Taormina offers many opportunities
in the way of hotels, restaurants, bars, discos, entertainment
and sports (windsurfing, scuba diving, mountain-biking, mountain
climbing, rafting, tennis and golf).
For walkers, the
surroundings of Taormina are a beautiful paradise. There are
several trails leading down to the sea and up to the picturesque
village of Castelmola, and to the top of the highest mountain
in the area, Monte Venere, where one of the three Greek Venus
temples is rumored to have been.
Of course, the entire region is also known worldwide for its
traditional food. As well as a unique type of rich red wine
made from the grapes grown on Mount Etna, the largest active
volcano in Europe.
Taormina is situated
perfectly giving Italian language students quick access to
the beautiful and historically important treasures of Sicily:
the right place to combine study and vacation.
