Taormina:
Excursions
A major attraction in Taormina
is the Ancient Theater. Dating back to the 2nd century, this
monument is 110 meters in diameter it offers a breath-taking
view of the Etna volcano and of the coast. Some distance away
are the ruins of an ancient temple and an Antiquarium collecting
relics discovered in Taormina. The Antiquarium is a small
archaeological museum with interesting marble statues and
relics from a Roman Theatre dated the 2nd century BC, and
from a 1st century BC Roman Villa.
Although perched high up
a headland, Taormina has some beautiful beaches below. Capo
Sant’Andrea encloses the little Mazzarò bay on
the south side that is riddled with caves and grottoes. The
longest beaches, Spisone and Mazzeo, extend north of Mazzarò.
Castle Mola stands isolated
on the top of Monte Tauro. Just below is the Santuario della
Madonna della Rocca. From a little terrace before the church
extends a fine view on Taormina’s theatre and the city.
A footpath continues up to the castle, that consists of a
medieval fortification built on the ruins of an ancient acropolis.
The outer walls and the ruins of a tower are what remains
of the trapezoidal-shaped building. It also provides a fine
sight of the theatre and Taormina.
Palazzo Corvaia is a beautiful
castle named after the aristocratic family who owned it from
the 17th through the 19th century. It has an imposing facade
with a battlement and a three-mullioned window. The cubic
tower and the central side of the castle date from the Arabian
rule. Presently it belongs to the municipality and houses
the Municipal Library.
The castle of Castelmola,
is located in Castelmola, a village near Taormina, that was
an outpost against foreign invasions. The castle, nestled
atop a cliff overlooking a terrific landscape, only retains
some few ruins.
The Chiesa dell’Annunziata,
next to the cemetery, is of Norman origin. Re-built, it retains
a portal finely decorated with white stone. A regional specialty
typical of these parts is an almond wine that was invented
by the local inhabitants of Castle Mola.
Letoianni is a tourism developed resort,
offering natural beauty and great seafood cuisine.
