Siena, Italy:
City Overview

Siena is what many consider the perfect antidote to Florence. This is due to the fact that Siena's building activity was largely suspended in the 16th century, and because most modern building has taken place outside the city walls, Siena's original character remains unspoiled, and Siena remains essentially a medieval town. The walls and gates enclose a city center that is composed of narrow, winding streets and old buildings and palaces. If you want to spend time studying and learning Italian in a charming and historic place, then Siena is the perfect option for you.

Surrounded by the lush wine region of Chianti and extensive olive groves, Siena is easily one of the most charming towns in the Tuscany region of Italy. The center of the city is dominated by a large, shell-shaped square called the Piazza del Campo, which is the focus of Siena's civic life. The Piazza del Campo is built at the convergence of Siena's three principal roads, the Banchi di Sopra, Banchi di Sotto and Via di Città. Each of these roads leads into one of the city's three medieval terzi, or quarters: the Terzo di Città to the southwest, the Terzo di San Martino to the southeast, and the Terzo di Camollia to the north. This central core - entirely medieval in plan and appearance - is essentially a pedestrian area. Finding your way around is therefore simple and enjoyable; everywhere of interest is within easy walking distance.

Outside of Siena one can find plenty of great things to see and do. This region of Italy is famous for its beauty, mild climate and historic towns and villages. Heading north one finds the Chianti region full of rolling vineyards and olive trees. Some towns of interest include the ancient towns of Monteriggioni and San Gimignano. To the south you can explore the Arbia Valley and the hilltop village of Montacino. While there take some time to taste the local Brunello wine. A short distance to the west and you will hit the stunningly beautiful coastline of Italy which is dotted with lovely beaches and historic towns and villages.

Overall we are pretty confident that Siena is a wonderful place to come to study and learn Italian at our partner Italian language school.
