Rome: Suggested Itineraries
Following are suggested itineraries
in order not to overdo a trip of Rome, if one has a short time.
You must remember that there is much more to the city than just
the Roman ruins - its worth making the time to have at least one
long lunch at a little trattoria or pizzeria in one of the many
piazzas.
One Day Itinerary
San Pietro and musei del Vaticano
in the morning; Piazza del Campidoglio, Foro Romano, Palatino, Via
dei Fori Imperiali and the Colosseo in the afternoon (the Foro Romano
closes at 2 pm in the winter and 5 pm in the summer)
Two Day Itinerary
All of the above on the first
day; then on the second day, a visit to one of the catacombs (such
as San Callisto) on the Via Appia Antica (Appian Way) in the morning
and , in the afternoon, a wander around the historic center of Rome
to see the Scalinata della Trinità dei Monti (Spanish Steps),
Fontana di Trevi, the Pantheon and Piazza Navona, where you can
stop for a well-earned coffee before planning the evening's activities.
Three Day Itinerary
As above for the first two days;
then on the third day, visit some of Rome's more interesting churches
but adding Santa Maria Maggiore and San Giovanni in Laterano.
One Week Itinerary
All of the above, plus visits
to some of the following: the Musei Capitolini, the Galleria Borghese
(and a walk through the Villa Borghese), the Museo Nazionale di
Villa Giulia and the Terme di Caracalla (Caracalla Baths), as well
as a day trip out of Rome, to one or more of the following, Tivoli
(Villa Adriana and Villa d'Este), Ostia Antica (ancient Roman port
town) or Tarquinia (painted Etruscan tombs). Or, if you want a break,
take time out to wander around the Aventino (Aventine Hill) or Celio
(Celian Hill), where you can picnic in a park.
