Other Attractions
Market
Visitors must experience shopping
at the open air markets in Antigua. These markets are colorful,
chaotic and lively especially on fridays and saturdays. Vendors
offer a huge array of tropical fruits, vegetables and meats produced
in the region.
Casa Popenoe
It is a beautifully restored
colonial mansion built in 1636. It was destroyed by the 1773 earthquake
and remained in ruins until it was purchased in 1931 by Dr Wilson
and Dorothy Popenoe. The couple’s authentic restoration yields
a fascinating glimpse of how an Antiguan royal official’s
family lived in the 17th century.
Casa K’ojom
The Casa K’ojom Music Museum is one of Antigua’s
most fascinating attractions. It has an interesting collection of
pre-Hispanic and post-conquest musical instruments like gourd marimbas,
wooden flutes and violins. A part of the museum is dedicated to
Mayan music and the traditional ceremonies in which they were used.
Videos, photographs, paintings, tools and sculptures are also on
display including an effigy of Maximon, the comical cigar-smoking
Mayan god of luck and lust. There is a superlative audio visual
show and a live demonstration of the instruments in the collection.
Monumento a Landívar
Rafael Landívar, a Jesuit priest and poet,
was one of the country's important literary figures of the 18th
century. Some of his most famous poems praising the natural beauty
of Central America, were written while Landívar was in exile
in Italy. Dedicated to him is the Landívar Monument, a structure
of five baroque-style arches set in a little park.
