Greece
is situated in south eastern Europe. The country is unique
in the sense that it is compromised of both a substantial
mainland area along with hundreds of small islands. Currently
there are approximately 10-12 million Greeks, of which the
majority live in the city of Athens.
Greece is surrounded by the Agean, Ionian
and the Mediterranean Seas. To the north lie the countries
of Albania, Bulgaria, former Yugoslavian provinces and Turkey.
Greece has always been the stepping stone between Europe and
Asia.
Greece is divided in four regions. To the
south lies the Peloponnese, in the central region lies Central
Greece and Thessaly, and to the north resides the areas of
Epirus, Thrace, and Macedonia. Finally the last and most well
known region of Greece are the islands, ever popular with
tourists and Greeks alike.
This geographical location translates into
warm/hot summers and relatively mild winters. The islands
tend to have an even more temperate climate. Based on this,
some of the best months to visit Greece are from Feb./March
to June.
