| Throughout
the year, Greece plays host to a dazzling array of events.
These events can be classified as either cultural, religious,
or national in nature.
Of all the events, Easter is the most important
holiday in Greece. The holiday is well known for feasting
and fireworks. From a religious standpoint the emphasis of
Easter relates to the Crucifixion, and as such, it is a time
of joy.
On March 25th Greeks celebrate national independence
from the Turks. In 1821 after many years of struggle the Greeks
finally became independent. This holiday is also combined
with the religious holiday of the Feast of the Anunciation.
October 26th is the Feast of St Demetrius.
This day is very popular in the region of Thessaloniki. In
addition to the religious aspect of the festival it is also
popular because this is the day new wine is tasted.
Also in the Thessaloniki you will also find
the increasingly renowned International Thessaloniki Film
festival. It is the largest film festival in this part of
Europe and provides new and upcoming filmmakers the chance
to showcase their latest films.
One of the more unusual festivals takes place
in small villages in northern Greece on January 8. During
this day the traditional roles are reversed between men and
women. Women go out to cafes and other parts of town while
the men do chores around the house.
Finally the Greek version of Carnival takes
place February through March. It is a time a getting together,
feasting, dressing up, and just having fun. A unique experience
that is worthwhile to see.
The above events are just a few of the many
activities taking place in Greece.
