As would be expected, the official language of Greece is Greek. One of the oldest languages in Europe, the language dates back at least 4,000 years. The Greek spoken today is not the same as ancient Greek and in academic circles is referred to as Demotiki Greek.

The Greek culture has had a profound influence on Western Civilization. The foundations of many modern ideas can be directly traced back to the Ancient Greeks. Names such as Plato, Socrates, Archimedes and Aristotle are well known thousands of years later.

s with many Western societies, the service sector is of increasing importance to the overall economy. Despite this, a substantial proportion of the Greek population is still involved in agricultural related endeavors. Tourism play an important part of Greek life and accounts for up to 7% of GDP. Culture and tradition still play a prominent role in everyday life. Businesses still close on the important Greek Orthodox holidays. Prior to traveling to Greece be aware of these holidays. They are wonderful to experience, but since many businesses shut down can cause some inconvenience.

A pleasurable part of any trip to Greece involves discovering the local foods and wines. Much of the food so common today in Greece is as a result of a culinary heritage influenced greatly by Turkish Rule. Some tasty examples of Greek food include Tzatziki (a yogurt and cucumber dish), Souviaki (grilled meat with pita bread), and Spanakopita (cheese and spinach pie). These are just a few of the examples, different regions of Greece have their own culinary traditions. A visit to the local cafe will give you a chance to see locals indulge in.
