The following are just some of
the more interesting attractions in Greece. There are of course
hundreds of other places well worth a visit.
Meteora
One of the more interesting
places in Greece to visit are the Monasteries of Meteora.
These Monasteries, constructed centuries ago a perched atop
massive rocks and cliffs.
The name Meteora comes
from the phrase "floating in the air". Meteora is
home to some amazing rock formations. The formations alone
are beautiful and worth a visit just to see them. Even more
amazing however is the fact that at the top of many reside
old Monasteries Originally build by hermit monks, the Monasteries
grew in importance over the centuries. The location and design
of the Monasteries also afforded the monks protection, and
in most cases the only access to a monastery was by a rope
and pulley. Today bridges and walkways allow access.
Athens
Most trips to Greece start in Athens. From
there the first site of visit typically is the Acropolis.
It is the symbol of Athens and Greece and is one of the most
recognizable structures in the world. Originally used as far
back as 650 BC, the Acropolis has been used as a fortress
and an important place of worship. The three most important
temples atop the Acropolis are the Parthenon, the Temple of
Nike and the Erechtheion.
.Within Athens there are some excellent museums.
The most important museum is the National Archaeological Museum.
This museum has important and extensive collections of Ancient
Greek art. The collection is extensive and dates back to the
beginning of Greek society. As with any museum this large
a thorough investigation would take a few days. It is possible
to visit the main exhibits in just a few hours however.
While many associate Greece with ancient
times, the Byzantine History of the country is especially
interesting. Of particular interest is the period known as
the Golden Ages of Byzantine Art. This period of the 11th
and 12th centuries saw the building of some of the most important
Byzantine Churches in Athens. Some of the more interesting
churches include Kapnikarea, Ayioi Theodoroi, Ayios Nikolaos
Rangavas, and Sotira Lykodumou.
Delphi
Delphi is an extremely popular attraction
in Greece. Located a few hours outside of Athens this site
is listed on most tour itineraries for Greece. Additionally
it is an extremely day trip from Athens.
During ancient times Delphis was a place
of high importance. It was considered by many to by the center
of the world. According to legend it was here at Delphi where
the Gods and Man were the closest.
Over the centuries people from all over the
civilized world would go to Dephi to speak to the Oracle.
They were looking for some divine guidance. To this day, Delphi
is still a place of mystery.
