Greece: Spétses Island
Located at the entrance of the
Argolic Gulf, Spetses is a beautiful small island. Historically
this Greek island is famous due to its importance during the Greek
Revolution.
Located a short 50 miles from
the Harbor of Piraeus (Athens), there are numerous shuttle and
ferry service between the island and the mainland of Greece. Spétses
also has excellent ferry and hydrofoil links to Náfplio,
Árgos, Epídhavros, Mycenae and to the southern town
of Monemvasía. If you have a chance visit the Ancient Drama
Festival at Epídhavros. This festival is held during the
summer months and is very popular with locals and tourists.
If you are not coming from Athens (Greece), there
are a variety of options from the Peloponnesian area of Greece.
Traveling through this region gives the traveler the chance to
see some beautiful countryside while at the same time the opportunity
to stop by Epidaurus. Epidauras was an ancient Greek city and
home to a wonderful example of the type of theatres the Ancient
Greeks could build. To this day, during the summer months plays
and theater are still performed in the ancient theater at Epidaurus.
Continuing through this region of Greece travelers also have the
chance to get to Mycenae and Tyrins.
Upon arrival at Spetses (Greece ) get ready to
relax. For a variety of reasons cars are not allowed on Spetses.
This means transportation is limited to buses or horse drawn carriages.
It also possible to take a water taxi to visit some of the beautiful
coastline of Spetses.
On this Greek island you will find a tranquil
experience. Yet there is still plenty of action to be had if you
so desire. The town has some nice restaurants and shops along
with some interesting museums. The key feature however of the
island relates to it natural beauty.
The town beach is located in
the area of the Church of Aghios Mamas. The beach is nice, but
some of the nearby beaches are superior. These beaches are Aghia
Marina, Aghia Anarghhri, Aghia Paraskevi and Zogeria.
