Soap Factory:
AZ Athens
The Soap Factory offers a wonderful
rustic inside space where old artifacts and machinery from the
original factory are displayed, stressing their historical and
educational value. Several exhibitions have been organized since
its inception: in fall 1996, Wim Delvoye and Priscilla Monge accepted
the challenge to inaugurate the main hall, the first one to be
restored. In spring 1997, seven Swedish artists took over in an
exposition called "The Conspiracy", reflecting the changed
atmosphere in their country after the violent death of their prime
minister, Olaf Palme.
Nine Greek artists participated
in the "Loops" exhibition which looked into the influences
that trickle into the artist's work from his daily surroundings
and contacts.
Other cultural events that
were organized under the auspices of the Greek language school
in Athens at The Soap Factory include three theatre productions,
held in summer 1998. The Theatre company of the University of
Florida Gainesville performed Shakespeare's "The Tempest"
. The Theatre Company of the University of Detroit, Mercy performed
'Death of a Blind Old Man' based on the myth 'Oedipus at Colonus'
and the musical 'The Long Way Home' about the Greek hero Odysseus.
The Soap Factory is a perfect
venue for commercial events, including fashion shows, product
presentations, receptions, etc. both outdoors and indoors. Lingerie
and hosiery company "Dim" presented its products on
the catwalk in the main hall, Absolut Vodka decided to sponsor
one of the exhibitions and built an outdoor vodka bar, while Dafni
Publications launched its new magazine Maxim under a giant video
wall, accompanied by music and plenty of food, beautifully displayed
on round tables in the open space in front of the buildings.
